Let me update you on what has happened to my life after Bethany…
I’ve always had this idea of being a cop, particularly with the RCMP. I was traveling in South America for a few months after Bethany and I got talking with a man named Alexis. Alexis was the president of the ministry organization that I was working with and a passionate man of God. When he had asked what I wanted to do with my life I told him about the RCMP. His eyes lit up and we talked for a while about the ethical issues involved in policing. From this conversation I found out that Alexis was training police in ethics in South America. Bottom line is, ethics inspired me to be RCMP. In this world there is a lot of corruption and evil when it comes to authority, not all, but more than we like to know about. I always wondered what it would be like to be a Christian and a cop. Let me tell you, it’s not unlike most Christian’s lives…challenging.
I was working for a honey farm in Chilliwack BC, honing my skills as a bountiful coaxer of honey, when I decided that I would look into applying for the RCMP. I always went to every interview or test with the idea that I would work hard and prepare for anything, but if the door got closed, I would be happy that God had shut that door and was confident that he would give me another idea for a career. I believe that God gives you ideas and passion, and all I had to do was step out with a foot and act on it. I’m glad I never gave up on the long process of getting into RCMP, but one year turned into two years and I thought I would never go and train in Regina. Classic, let’s put the life on hold for a couple of years. It’s funny how you feel about your life in the midst of things, but when you look back on it, it feels like it was nothing. During this time I was 22 and I had met the girl who is now my fiancĂ©e. Danielle always encouraged me to go for what I was passionate about.
I finally got the call to go to Depot in Regina and train, having no clue fully what I was getting myself into. Depot is one of those things that if you think Bethany or your local summer camp is a bubble, then it is probably number one on that list. Depot proved to be a challenge, both physically and mentally for everyone involved. You find out what you can handle and what you have to work on to even begin to start towards your career aspiration. I was glad when I graduated, and I felt like I could take on the world with one hand. I moved up to Grande Prairie AB and was quickly thrown into the shift work of general duty as an RCMP officer. Let me tell you, it’s fun and interesting, but I generally see people in some of their lowest points of life. Seeing it over and over again is discouraging at times. However, I feel like this is where I want to spend my life and energy for the time being and enjoy the blessings that God has given me.
Bethany College has been one of those transitional places in my life that I will never forget. I know that is where I was able to grow a good foundational relationship with God and that relationship is what I want to continue everyday.
